How many types of truck transmissions are there?

Truck transmissions are mainly categorized into five types: manual transmission (MT), automatic transmission (AT), automated manual transmission (AMT), dual-clutch transmission (DCT), and continuously variable transmission (CVT).

Main Types of Truck Transmissions

1. Manual Transmission (MT).

Shifting gears is achieved by the driver manually operating the clutch and shift lever. This traditional configuration for heavy-duty trucks features a simple structure, high reliability, and low maintenance costs.

2. Automatic Transmission (AT).

Utilizing a torque converter and planetary gearset for automated shifting, this type is suitable for complex operating conditions (such as frequent starting and stopping). However, its transmission efficiency is lower and its cost is higher. Representative brands include Allison.

3. Automatic Manual Transmission (AMT).

This type combines the efficiency of a manual transmission with the convenience of an automatic transmission by adding an electronic control system. It is currently the mainstream automatic transmission choice for trucks, with a market share of up to 70% in Europe. ‌‌

‌4. Dual-Clutch Transmission (DCT).

This system uses two sets of clutches to alternately operate, enabling fast shifts and more consistent power delivery. However, the technology is complex and costly, and currently only used by a few brands, such as Volvo. ‌‌

‌5. Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT).

This system uses a steel belt drive to achieve continuously variable transmission, resulting in smooth shifting and low fuel consumption. However, it has limited torque capacity and high maintenance costs, making it less common in the truck industry. ‌‌

‌Special Types and Market Trends‌

‌● Multi-Gear Design: Domestic heavy-duty trucks often use 12- or 16-speed transmissions, which optimize power distribution by increasing the number of gears. ‌‌

‌● Technology Upgrade: AMT is gradually replacing manual transmissions. Domestic manufacturers such as Sinotruk and Fast have already launched mature products, with the price gap narrowing to around 10,000 yuan.
